Eligibility: Rising 4th graders through 6th grader, meaning students must have completed at least 3rd grade as of Spring 2021.

Pre-requisites: No experience required. We encourage those with experience to explore our weekend Sunday options instead as those courses will be more challenging due to more writing exercises and activities. This course is meant more so for students who are looking to ease themselves into the activity that is speech and debate or are just looking to improve their confidence in expressing themselves and speaking up.

Description: In this class students will get a chance to learn to develop their public speaking skills by learning about basic techniques and particular speech formats. Students will get a chance at impromptu speaking and to pick one of the many interpretive events. This along with various speech exercises will allow students to strengthen their ability to speak and express themselves. Students will also get a chance to learn to debate via the spar argumentation format. Students will learn the difference between simply arguing and presenting a well-structured argument. Students will learn about the various aspects of persuasion that orators and debaters require to convince their audience. Students will culminate the class with some fun debate exercises where students will test their wit and speaking skills with their peers.

NOTE: Keep in mind that this class will not make you eligible for advancement to our weekend program during the school year due to a difference in curriculum. If you are looking to compete or start the fall semester at a higher level, you should sign up for the weekly class on Saturday or Sunday. If you are a returning student from our weekend classes, you could take this class but it won't help you advance through our weekend program during the fall. This is meant to be an immersion/crash course for beginners or students with no experience.

Eligibility: Rising 4th graders through 6th grader, meaning students must have completed at least 3rd grade as of Spring 2021.

Pre-requisites: No experience required to join our beginner program but if you are seeking to join our intermediate or advanced classes, we will ask for writing samples and prior coaching feedback to ensure you are placed in the right experience level.

Description: Our weekend Saturday or Sunday classes are suitable for students who are seeking to join our classes’ long term in the school year or are seeking more of a challenge in learning new skills. This class will focus on introducing students to original speech formats like oratory and debate formats like congress where students will take the duration of the summer to research, write and present/deliver their speeches and debates for an end of the semester mock competition in their respective classes.

This class will allow students to advance to our weekend program during the school year which will focus on either continuing to help students gain their confidence in writing and speaking their own words or those who are ready for a challenge, go and compete!

Note: If you are looking to compete or start the fall semester at a higher level, you should sign up for the weekly class on Saturday or Sunday. Students in our current elementary program are encouraged to continue in the weekend program to continue advancing.

If you were in our elementary program at BIF prior to the start of this academic year, please contact us in order to receive the appropriate recommendation for experience level for the summer.

Description: Students will walk away with either one or more speech events ready for competition and/or debate ready arguments for one of the two possible topics that will be used for competition during the first two months of the school year. Students would be ready to compete in either the JV or Varsity level of competition if the work required is properly completed. Camps in debate will be lecture based with various activities and skill exercises introduced and practiced through the course of the camp. There will be a major emphasis on practice debates throughout the last week of camp including a mock practice tournament at the end of the camp.

Students must be accepted into this session, upon coaches’ review of past experience (for current GSA/BIF students, this includes reviewing your last semester progress report). If not accepted, students will be recommended to register for the beginning or intermediate competition session.

Returning students should consult their coaches and/or their last semester recommendation if unsure of your level for the summer. Students who are not a part of our organization should expect to turn in material including competition resume and judge feedback for review.

NOTE: If you plan to join us during the school year, simply taking this camp does not place you in our intermediate classes, as with our semester, there will be basic requirements and observations we will make to write up a final placement recommendation as well as general commentary and feedback for parents and students to review at the end of camp. This also does not exempt you from any other requirements including taking both speech and debate during the school year.
